Vaios Koutroukas is a senior Specialist Trainee Endocrinologist in the English NHS, and a doctoral candidate at the University of Leicester.

Following his admission to the Medical School of the University of Ioannina in Greece as the School’s highest-ranked new entrant in 2008, he completed a 6-year programme of studies in Medicine, graduating with an upper 2nd class equivalent degree in 2014.

He then graduated with a MSc in Healthcare Unit Management from the University of Cyprus.

For the first 3 years as a postgraduate doctor, Vaios served the Greek Army and the Greek NHS in SHO positions, and in 2017 he was offered a Core Medical Training post in Northern Ireland (12 months) and Southwest England (2 years).

Vaios’s longstanding dream to train as an Endocrinologist became true when he was offered a higher training post in Southwest England. He went on to pass the final College exam in 2021.

Having been granted Out-Of-Programme-for-Research status, Vaios secured funding to carry out research on hypoglycaemia, technology, and type 1 diabetes at the University of Leicester, and is working on his thesis as at the time of this update (April 2025).

Vaios received formal postgraduate training from the University of Plymouth as a teacher and trainer of medical students and professionals, and loves passing on his knowledge and skills. He is our Dr Coach.
