What do I have to do to keep my medical licence in Ireland?
Every year you are legally obliged to:
- retain your Medical Council registration by paying the annual fee
- provide proof of your indemnity or liability insurance if you are practising in Ireland
- maintain full details of your CPD in your specialty’s Professional Competence Scheme.
What is CPD?
CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. It’s a concept complementary to CME – Continuing Medical Education. These terms essentially capture the expectation and formal requirement that all Doctors should keep their skills and knowledge up to date for their scope of practice.
There are various types of CPD you can pursue. Examples include:
- external courses attended
- in-house training completed
- clinical audit and other quality improvement projects
- evidence of clinical governance participation, e.g. mortality and morbidity meetings
- research achievements
- teaching contributions.
Not every Doctor is required to carry out all of these. However, some audit activity is usually mandatory every year.
What is a Professional Competence Scheme?
A PCS – Professional Competence Scheme – is a set of scheme of mandatory membership for every practising Doctor in Ireland. It imposes a minimum set of CPD hours and variety on Doctors.
If you are practising in Ireland, you have to be a member of the PCS for your specialty. If you are not, the Medical Council could decide to remove you from the register, which means you will no longer be allowed to practise medicine in Ireland.
Depending on your specialty, you will have to join the right PCS. As at June 2024, the list is:
- Cardiology – RCPI.ie
- GeneralMedicine and medical specialties – RCPI.ie
- General Practice – icgp.ie
- Haematology – RCPI.ie
- MedicalOncology – RCPI.ie
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology – RCPI.ie
- Occupational Medicine – RCPI.ie
- Ophthalmology – rcSi.ie
- Paediatrics – RCPI.ie

- Psychiatry – IrishPsychiatry.ie
- PublicHealth – RCPI.ie
- Radiology – rcSi.ie
- Rehabilitation – RCPI.ie
- Sports & Exercise Medicine – rcSi.ie
- Surgery and surgical specialties – rcSi.ie
Is there a cost to pay for PCS membership?
Yes. Each organisation sets its own fees.
A typical PCS includes a digital platform account where you can upload your CPD evidence, and include some personal reflective comments on how it fits in with your career goals.
