You are a dentist, doctor, nurse, pharmacist, midwife, physio or other health professional. To avoid missing out on the chance to interview for jobs in the English / Scottish / Welsh NHS, Northern Ireland’s Health and Social Care, Ireland’s public health service, or independent hospitals and GP practices, you need an expertly written custom CV, resume or job application. Or a personal statement to win a place in a Postgraduate programme of study.

At UKmed we have created many successful CV’s and job applications for NHS Jobs, TRAC, the Scottish NHS, HSCNI Jobs, Ireland’s public hospitals, recruitment agencies, LinkedIn profiles and other targets.

We only write copy for health professionals.

Contents of a professional CV or job application in healthcare

What should you include in a CV or job application?

Although you have considerable freedom, your CV must meet the reviewer’s expectations. Readers have very limited time, and they increasingly use tools to help them in their selection. So, your CV or application form must be concise, rich, accurate and interesting.

Add to that the strict word limits imposed by digital platforms and the typically tight submission deadlines, and you can see why an expert CV copywriting service makes sense.

Importantly, career gaps need to be explained, and any limitations – for example, blind spots in your hospital experience – should be made clear. Employers expect you to be sincere, and so does your profession’s code of conduct.

Why UKmed’s CV authoring approach is unique

We do more than merely record your strong and weak areas in highly polished English.

We will kick off with an in-depth online discussion between you and our Lead coach, to understand, keep notes and advise you. That is, once your career objectives are clear, we may be able to give you some actionable tips on how to bolster the CV’s weaker areas. Examples include:

  • training in English for interviews
  • creating new evidence, e.g. organising your surgical logbook
  • attending courses selectively
  • learning to teach and delivering teachings
  • acquiring research and publishing skills.

The end product is in online form or PDF on your target digital platform, so you can then submit job applications easily.

Foundation and Specialist Training job applications

Training posts differ from career posts in several ways, including when, where and how to submit your job application for them.

Another key difference is that the bar is set higher, competition is stiff, and most candidates need broader support, not just a well-written application. That’s why UKmed offers a full support service to Foundation and Specialist Training candidates.

Every January, July, October, November and December trainee recruitment rounds take place in the UK and/or Ireland at various levels. To name a few:

  • Foundation Year 2 Standalone kicks off in January.
  • General Practice in the UK holds its main round in November and clearing in July.
  • Ireland recruits in October.
  • The main Specialist Training vacancies for the UK are published in November.
  • Higher training posts in the UK typically recruit candidates in November and December. Clearing rounds may be run in Spring if vacancies go unfilled.

The UK uses the Oriel platform exclusively for Foundation, Specialist, Subspecialist and Academic Clinical training posts. Essentially, your CV must take the form of an Oriel application that should score high enough for an invite to the next round.

However, it’s important to know that for several specialties your CV is not enough, no matter how impressive it may be. You may have to take the MSRA (Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment) as part of the selection process for your chosen specialty. Similarly, for Foundation Year 2 Standalone you have to take the SJT.

Dentist CV

Dentists submit free-form (PDF) CV’s rather than online applications, in response to job ads or even speculatively, which means emailing your CV directly to an employer who might be interested although not advertising openly.

Alternatively, Oriel also publishes dental specialist training vacancies.

It’s important to know what to add and what to leave out. A general rule is to anticipate what your employer would expect from a dentist at your age and career stage who studied in the UK. For example, completing a modest course in Safeguarding Adults and Children could be a better idea for a new graduate than a highly specialised course in dental implants – you will be seeing lots of older-aged patients and children, but not really doing much implant work in the first few years of your career.

That’s why planning ways how to boost your CV carefully is part of UKmed’s full support package for dentists. We have you covered from the day you leave Dental School to the end of your first month at work with our NHS Dental Performer List service package.

A selection interview will follow. These tend to be more informal for dentists, but you still have to do well to land the job and earn the income you deserve.

Nurse CV

As a nurse interested in the UK’s NHS, the Irish public health service, or independent hospitals in the UK and Ireland, you will also need a professional CV or job application form.

Even going through a recruitment agency means that you must present yourself professionally, accurately and attractively on NHS Jobs, TRAC or other target platform, or in your free-form CV.

A selection interview will follow.

NB. Before you apply for jobs, you will need to obtain NMC Registration.

Pharmacist CV

Your objective being to work in the NHS or the independent sector of the UK or Ireland, you may well have to apply on NHS Jobs or TRAC, email your free-form CV, or upload it to an employer’s custom platform. A selection interview will follow.

Note: you will first need to achieve GPhC registration.

Personal statement

Assuming your objective is to be accepted for a Postgraduate degree by a University in the UK or Ireland, you will be required to fill out an online application form including a personal statement.

UKmed can help. Our approach is to pack your personal statement with everything that makes you valuable, and avoid exaggerated and flowery language. To that end, you will have an in-depth discussion with our Lead coach.

Interview training

In virtually every selection scenario, a successful CV or job application will get you shortlisted for selection interview. Interviews take place online, so you won’t have to travel.

UKmed offers one-to-one training in selection interview skills customised to your needs.

Most of the time, employers require you to book an online interview at very short notice. To avoid disappointment, we highly recommend booking your interview training with UKmed in advance.
