You are a dentist interested in working in Ireland. Your dental degree can be recognised for registration by the Irish Dental Council, however, the exact recognition route depends on where and when you were awarded your degree. European member-state nationals can use the Automatic System, the General System, or the article 3(3) routes of Directive 2005/36/EC. Non-European nationals will likely have to follow the Council’s exam route.

Five reasons to choose Ireland Dental Registration by UKmed

For your peace of mind, our Ireland Dental Registration service is all-inclusive, to help you start working and earning sooner. We will:

  • advise you strategically and tactically, to help you save time, effort and money,
  • obtain all the required official documents for you, including certificates of current professional status and criminal record checks from every European country you are registered in,
  • translate the right documents and have them certified correctly,
  • deal with the bureaucracy instead of you wasting valuable time and energy,
  • manage the registration process to avoid errors.

English language certification for dental practice in Ireland

Irish law requires you to have the communication skills necessary to practise dentistry safely in Ireland. The Dental Council requires specific English language certification test results at the registration stage. This is unlike the Medical Council, which registers doctors without an English language certificate.

Achieving certification is an additional challenge that can delay your registration. On the positive side, thanks to your English certification, your CV will look stronger.

The Dental Council accepts one of the following types of proof of your English language competence:

  • A recent Occupational English Test result with scores at B or higher.
  • A recent Academic IELTS test result with scores at 7.0 or higher.
  • A primary or postgraduate dental qualification undertaken in English.
  • Fully registered practice in an EU member-state where English is an official language for 3 out of the 5 years before your application. The Council may also consider dental practice in a non-EU English-speaking country.

Thinking of relying on your degree or practice? Please contact us before you decide, as there are a lot of details to look into very carefully. It’s not enough to simply present a dental degree made up of lectures in English.

I am a European citizen with an old European dental degree

If you are a European citizen or have EU rights, and you were awarded your dental degree in a country that was not an EU member state at the time of your studies, then you still have a chance of getting recognised under the General System of Directive 2005/36/EC. You should, however, be prepared for a lengthier process of portfolio assessment that will look in detail at your curriculum and CV since graduation, unless the Dental Council accepts your acquired rights.

Contact us for an opinion on your individual circumstances. UKmed has substantial experience in working with acquired rights, as well as with the General System of the Directive.

I am a European citizen with a non-European dental degree

If you are a European citizen or have EU rights, but your dental degree is from outside the EU, then you still have a chance of recognition under the Automatic System of Directive 2005/36/EC, provided that your degree – combined with your work experience and history of registration in Europe – conform to article 3 paragraph 3 of the Directive.

Dental Specialist registration in Ireland

If you are a European citizen or a person with EU rights, you could obtain specialist registration as an Orthodontist or Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon in Ireland based on the Automatic System of EU Directive 2005/36/EC.

I am an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. Do I have to register as a Dentist in Ireland?

Not necessarily. Contact us to discuss your individual circumstances and career plan. As an example, you can register as a doctor only, as long as your Irish employer will not require you to carry out dental work.

I have a postgraduate degree of specialisation. Can I obtain Specialist Registration in Ireland?

Possibly, depending on the length of your training and the Dental Council’s assessment of your application portfolio. Contact us to discuss your individual circumstances.

Is Irish Dental Council registration possible without an EU passport?

Yes, but most likely through a two-part exam.

Note that Ireland has made agreements with Canadα and the UK for the mutual recognition of dental degrees without exams.

How much is the Irish Dental Council’s annual fee to stay registered?

Annual fee to stay on the register: EUR 380 as at February 2025.

Additionally, you will pay a one-off registration fee of EUR 330 as at February 2025.

Much higher fees apply to exams for non-EEA dentists.

Allied dental professions in Ireland

The Dental Council also requires Dental Hygienists, Dental Nurses, Dental Technicians and Orthodontic Therapists to be registered.

If you are an allied dental professional thinking about starting work in Ireland, your degree won’t be enough for registration. Be ready to have a well-prepared portfolio of studies and experience in order to argue your case successfully. We may be able to help you.

Working as a dentist in Ireland
